the iPhone doesn't compete against Android. The iPhone competes against all of the handsets running Android. And it's killing them. The 3GS as the second best-selling handset? That's frankly embarrassing for Android.

Yes, the iPhone does compete against Android. The last time I went into a AT&T or Verizon store, this was obvious. To say that the iPhone does not compete against Android is silly.

    the most popular handset
the 2nd most popular handsetBecause there is only two hardware choices, the iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS. Making this argument is so empty, in that it does not take into account the reasons behind it.

the most popular mobile OSHello Mr. Straw man. The article was about iPhone; if you read it it states "covering U.S. mobile phone sales". Now, if by mobile OS, you are also adding in the iPad, that is debatable. I've been a iPad 3G owner since April 30th and I can tell you that I do not consider the iPad a mobile device. Sure, its easy to carry, but to lump in its sales with phone handset sales is a stretch. If you are making that stretch, how about adding netbooks into the mix as well?

the most popular tablet. Again, the article was about the iPhone vs. Andriod handset sales, not the tablet sales. Another Straw Man approach to a comment about iPhone handset sales.

    getting "badly beaten"?
When your sales numbers for phones are ~50% of that of your competitor; whereas a few years ago they were barely a blip, then yes that means they are getting kicked in the teeth in handset OS sales.

Yeah, if you read the whole patent (http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=1902), you'll notice that it makes mention of "force sensors" underneath the display to tell if it is a "light" or "hard" touch. A finger being waved above an object doesn't have force to sense, and in looking at the more tablet-oriented part of the patent, you can see that a hand is clearly holding the object (http://images.appleinsider.com/patent-ipod-touch19.gif). The document also makes several references to the input devices appearing or disappearing based on the proximity of a finger.

It would seem that the main purpose of this is to make overlays like this possible:

    This isn't a "none-touch" patent.

But if no one called 911, they could be in violation of local laws that make it a crime to ignore a violent crime.

There is no legal duty to assist, and laws requiring otherwise are unconstitutional and thus unenforceable.

triple: 20-30 dollar cost difference, probably less in quantity. It is just coming from apple not wanting to put a high res screen on the laptop for some reason, probably their misguided attempt at hitting a specific dpi count until resolution independance.

Yeah... and based on sales, not surveys, the iPhone sure is hurting now given it just had it's best sales quarter ever.

Win... why don't you get it? There is the iPhone and then there is everything else. Android is a good smart phone OS... IMO, the best alternative to the iPhone. But the reality is, people buy an iPhone because they want an iPhone. People buy an Android based phone because they want a phone and it's on sale this week.

Android is not going to slaughter the iPhone. It's a huge market out there and there will always be multiple alternatives for the OS's. If anything, the companies with the most worries are RIM and Microsoft. They continue to loose market share like crazy to Apple and Android based phones.

But please... If you want to fantasias about Android OS phones taking over the world, I'm sure there more people like you over on the Android forums that also have this twisted view. Besides, why does the iPhone worry you so much? It's great that it's there and it's great the Android is there too. The competition is making both solutions better.

There is a difference between sales and market share. Without a doubt, part of the appeal of android is cost - it's just cheaper to buy. However, it's not as simple as you suggest

People buy an Android based phone because they want a phone and it's on sale this week

Some people buy it so they can have a larger screen, some because they want a keyboard, some because they have specific hardware needs (e.g. The US Army), some because they do not want to live under of the heel of Steve Jobs twisted moral code. I could go on, but it's become the proverbial dead horse. Sure, Android has pitfalls in that it can run almost anything, but I would rather have the freedom to make a bad app choice than to live in the walled garden that iOS is becoming.

In short, the freedom to make choices, even bad ones, is superior to being spoon fed like a baby as Apple tends to do.

They'll likely time it to match the release of the sprint iphone.

Why make another SKU (or 4 for that matter). Just add another band to the GSM chip. They added a band just for the jp market, so why not the same thing here?

Many get garbage 3G speeds on AT&T in many areas anyway, so what's the point of having a 4G iPhone that GSM provider (insert AT&T) in the US can't even support on a mass basis?

Yargggh me crappy ATT! Who cares data speed isn't really the weakpoint right now.

After the Month of Kernel Bugs, are you concerned about Mac OS X security?

    No - 62%

See, that bugs me. Everyone should be concerned about security. I believe OS X's overriding security feature is obscurity, and once that situation changes I can see the OS falling over very quickly.

One of the weakest links in the chain is the user, and if the user is not concerned then you have a problem.

Dont get me wrong, I think OS X is great, but it just hasn't been "weathered" in the wild like Windows has. If OS X becomes a viable target then we're in for a bumpy ride.

Not that I don't appreciate your sentiment, but her pluming has been reported as female (unless you mean a womb?). Though yes, even if it wasn't it wouldn't change the fact that she's a woman

People seem to be making all kinds of assumptions about this girl they've never met, it's ridiculous.

Right, so with the bigger screen size, Apple has either:

    1) Dropped retina-display.
    2) Decided on a new resolution that developers will have to adhere to, given that DVGA (double VGA) has been in use for a year and HVGA was in use for 4 years (3 exclusively).

Yeah, I'm not buying in to either

EDIT: I did not read the OP, I'm a moron. Still, bigger display, same res? Pretty lame... Apple just didn't 'future proof' when they chose DVGA.

I'm honestly surprised by a lot of you. The whole "no single android phone outsells the iPhone!" argument, is foolish and weak. It's a platform war. You basically get ONE CHOICE with the iPhone. Now it's a great choice, but of course it's going to be a top seller as a result. There are so many good Android choices out there that a single model isn't going to dwarf the others. Since there are, you know, options? As a platform it seems iOS is getting whooped on. Does that not register, or are people that much in denial?

Now myself, I like my iPhone, but come on...in this case we are talking about platforms...So weird...

No, it's not a war; the only people who consider it a war are the people who will do anything to prove Apple isn't an innovative and in many ways cutting edge company. Competition? Yes. Competition is good. But if you really look, the majority of Android phones available on the open market sell for less than $100 and most of those sell for less than $50. So for Apple to offer its older model in the same price range is only leveling the field and proving that it's not just Android, but the price that is driving Android's sales so fast. Compete in the same ball fields at the same pricing and you see that Apple picks up many of those people who claimed they couldn't afford one or didn't want to switch to a different provider.
